Field Placement
- Year-round access to externships in DC
- A diverse legal marketplace
- Academic credit and faculty guidance
- Opportunities for multiple externships
- Exposure to the real-life work of legal practitioners
Located in the heart of the most diverse legal market in the country, GW Law’s Field Placement Program has established an extensive network of approved opportunities so that students can search for externships in nearly any area of law they wish to explore.
The DC area is home to federal agencies, federal and state courts in DC and neighboring Maryland and Virginia, large and small law firms, and leading nonprofit organizations. Because of this diversity, the Field Placement Program encourages students to experience more than one externship.
Externships bring to life the theory learned in the classroom so that students discover what they love in practice—as well as what they don’t—and test their skills in oral advocacy and legal writing. In addition, students develop a network of professional contacts and learn how to work in a legal setting with practicing attorneys—skills that distinguish them during a job search. The requisite courses that students must take along with their externships are taught by sitting judges, former White House counsel, US Department of Justice attorneys, and public and private sector practitioners, all of whom bring energy and experience to the classroom.
With its vast network and committed faculty and staff, the Field Placement Program offers students a vital step in developing a satisfying professional identity.
